Photography help shooting lit Christmas trees?
Hi all, I am publishing a dog calendar and one of the months is proving tricky to shoot. I need a picture of a dog in front of a xmas tree to represent December. Problem is, if I use the flash, the tree looks dull and you cannot see the brightness of the tree lights. However, if I don’t use a flash, the image quality is poor and the individual hairs on the dog cannot be seen and it just looks blurry.
The image has to be of a dog in front of a lit Christmas tree (changing that set-up is not an option). I also have very limited editing software (so I cannot take individual pictures of a tree and a dog and then overlap them later). My only option is to get to grips with my SLR camera.
Can anyone give me any tips and settings regarding lighting and quality to help me solve this problem?

You need to do this on a manual setting.
I’d set up the dog and tree and my position.
Set your camera so you won’t use a flash but you want it on a tripod and you want to over expose you subject. This is difficult to do for legthy time frames – the dog is moving ( breathing) and will likely make major movements causing the bionic – effect to that bady part.
The Flash gives you brightness but no contrast ( details). Remove the flash and the darkness overshadows the details. Solution, you need to over expose so the light that is available will lighten the image a tad, but more importantly the details will show the longer it is exposed. Only problem is the subject cannot be moving. That is why most of the ever exposures are great for landscapes ( non-living subjects)..moderate over exposure time frames can be adequately done for humans.
Test how long by working with the tree alone – bring the dog into it later on.

I just realized if you have a tree that flashes some lights first, then other lgihts second.When you over-expose all lights will appear since all have flashed during the exposure time. So you would get the same effect if you used a steady-burning lighted tree. If you temporarily replaced the flasher so they are steady burning you’ll see what the camera will shoot – just so you know what the final picture will be looking like.
